NORTH READING — It has been a good start to the season for the North Reading High girls’ lacrosse team as they won their first two games. The Hornets improved to 2-0 on Monday afternoon as they beat guest Triton by a final of 14-12 in the Cape Ann League opener.
This game was tied at six at the half but then an 8-4 run gave the Hornets a, 14-10, advantage late. The Vikings (0-1) made things interesting late scoring the final two goals but the Hornets were able to hold on.
“We tried to play keep away late and made a couple of silly mistakes that led to those two goals,” explained Hornets head coach Matt Costello.
Faith Newton led the offense with six points as the senior co-captain had three goals and three assists. Senior co-captain, Brianne Slattery, had three goals and two assists while fellow senior co-captain, Mia Pittore, had three goals and one assist.
Another senior co-captain, Jenna DiNapoli, was the fourth Hornet to score three goals.
Senior Shea Tully and sophomore Callie MacLellan had the two other goals.
Mackenzie Murphy added two assists.
Goalie Kaitlyn Supple went to 2-0 in net as the junior made 11 saves.
In the season opener on March 31, the Hornets beat visiting Shawsheen Tech, 13-8, in a non-league match-up.
“The girls were excited to start the season and they brought the energy from the get go,” said Costello.
North Reading led 7-5 at the half as they held the Rams to only three goals in the second stanza.
“Our defense played very well in the second half,” said Costello.
Slattery had four goals and one assist while Pittore and Newton both had three goals and two assists. Murphy had one goal and one assist.
DiNapoli and sophomore, Lindsay Rosenthal, each found the back of the Rams net once.
Senior Colleen Gwozdz had two ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers.
Supple made 11 saves in that game as well.
The Hornets never trailed in both games.
North Reading will go to Pentucket on April 10 and Manchester-Essex on April 13. The Pentucket game will start at 4:30 p.m. while the Manchester-Essex contest will start at 6 p.m.
