WWII Army Air Corps veteran completed 30 missions, two on D-Day

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia — Albert Williamson, 100, of Williamsburg, Virginia, went peacefully to be with the Lord on April 15, 2023.

Albert was born to Anne and Harry Williamson and was one of nine children. Mr. Williamson graduated from Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, N.J. After high school he enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a radio operator and gunner aboard a B-17 with the 384th Bomb Group. He flew 30 missions, two of those on D-Day providing air support to troops on the ground at Normandy and Omaha beaches.

After the war he married Ruth M. Glendinning and attended Pace University in Nyack, N.Y. He earned a degree in accounting and spent his career working as an accountant, controller and treasurer.

Albert and Ruth moved to Wilbraham, Mass., and then to North Reading, Mass., where they raised four children. Albert was a member of the V.F.W., the Masons and was a Boy Scout leader. Over the years Albert and Ruth spent time at their homes in Grantham, N.H. and Ft. Myers, Florida, where they enjoyed special moments with their children and grandchildren. In 2015 Albert and Ruth moved to Williamsburg, Virginia where Albert became a member of the local V.F.W. chapter.

After Ruth’s passing in 2016, Albert spent many summers in Maine surrounded by his beloved great-grandchildren.

Albert is preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Ruth Williamson, his son, Danny Williamson; sisters, Anne Abrams, Dorothy Keilt, Hazel Derr, Lillian Penn and Gladys Holstrom and brothers, Donald Williamson, John Williamson and Harry Williamson. Albert leaves behind his children, Christie Williamson of Williamsburg, Virginia; Robyn Johns (Tyrone) of Williamsburg, Virginia; Richard Williamson (Michaele) of Rochester, N.H.; his daughter-in-law Jennifer Williamson of Ft. Myers, Florida; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 20 at the Union Congregational Church, 148 Haverhill St., North Reading. Interment will take place in the memorial garden of the Mighty 8th Air Force Museum in Pooler, Georgia.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org), Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarriorproject.org) and Doctors Without Borders (doctorswithoutborders.org).
