By DAN TOMASELLO
LYNNFIELD — The girls’ soccer team concluded last week with a win and a loss.
The Pioneers (5-1) defeated North Reading 2-1 on Sept. 21.
North Reading jumped out to an early 1-0 lead 20 minutes into the first half.
The Pioneers tied the game 1-1 when junior forward Bella Carroll drilled a shot five minutes into the second half. Junior midfielder Emma Rose had the assist.
“Emma fed the ball through the middle to Bella,” said Pioneers head coach Mark Vermont. “Bella was able to maneuver past her defender, and had a nice breakaway finish.”
Senior captain/midfielder Ally Sykes scored the game-winning goal with 15 minutes remaining in the contest. Rose and sophomore forward/midfielder Bella Sykes had the assists.
Vermont said Rose played very well against the Hornets.
“Emma did a nice job in the middle with her two assists,” said Vermont.
Senior captain Ava Gamache tallied four saves in net against the Hornets.
Vermont noted that the Pioneers and Hornets each had nine shots on goal during the contest.
“Our defense played a great game,” said Vermont. “Senior captain Keely Briggs, freshman Avery Haney, junior Lily Rocco, junior Ella Hayman and junior Ariana Guarracino played very well defensively. They did a good job neutralizing North Reading’s speed. We were able to match North Reading’s intensity.”
Falls to Hamilton-Wenham
The Pioneers began last week falling 2-0 to Hamilton-Wenham on Sept. 19.
After a scoreless first half, the Generals took a 1-0 lead six minutes in the second half.
Hamilton-Wenham scored its second goal with 15 minutes remaining in the game.
Gamache recorded four saves in the cage against the Generals.
Vermont said Ally Sykes played well against Hamilton-Wenham.
“Ally has been working very hard,” said Vermont.
Vermont said the Pioneers gave a valiant effort against the Generals.
“We fought hard all the way to the end,” said Vermont. “We played better in the second half and tried to move the ball like we are capable of, but Hamilton-Wenham outworked us.”
Upcoming games
The Pioneers faced Pentucket on Tuesday, Sept. 26, taking place after deadline. Lynnfield hosts Ipswich on Thursday, Sept. 28, beginning at 4 p.m. at Pioneer Stadium.
