Joseph Giovino, 91

US Army veteran who became a well known dentist

STONEHAM — Joseph James Giovino, DDS, of Stoneham, formerly of Melrose, passed away on September 27. He was 91 years of age. Joe was born and raised in Melrose, graduated from Melrose High School in 1949, Boston College in 1953 and Dental School from Loyola. Joe served his country with pride in the US Army during the Vietnam War Era in Lebanon, was later transferred to Germany and then returned to Melrose to start his dental practice.

Dr. Joe had a dental practice on the Lynn Fells Parkway in Melrose for over 40 years. Dr. Giovino had a passion for sports, played in a basketball league at the Melrose YMCA for many years and tennis up until the age of 89. He loved his career as a dentist and would spend time with all his patients to assure them not to worry. He had a great sense of humor and very dry whit. Joe also had a very strong faith that carried him thru life. 

He was the beloved husband of Barbara Anne (Duxbury) Giovino. Loving father of Cathy Bartholomew of Great Barrington; Ronald W. Bartholomew and his wife Diane of Billerica; Lynne Cahill and her husband Christopher of Winchester; and Caryl Bartholomew and her husband Adam Hooker of Andover. Cherished brother of Judith Giovino of FL; Diane Bena of Stoneham; the late Rita Pettito; and the late Ella Alfano. Also survived by 9 grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. 

Visitation was held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 West Foster St. Melrose, on Sunday, October 1 from 2 to 4 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Patrick’s Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham on Monday, October 2 at 10 a.m. Followed by a burial at Lakeside Cemetery in Wakefield.
