LYNNFIELD — On Oct. 5, the Lynnfield High boys’ soccer team edged visiting Newburyport, 1-0, to complete the season sweep over the Clippers. It is the Pioneers’ first season sweep over the Clippers in five years.

“Both teams were missing players and it was a pretty even match,” said Lynnfield head coach Brent Munroe. “We didn’t play our best game but we played hard.”

The lone goal of the day came 10 minutes into the first half as Dillon Reilly headed home a corner kick by Alessandro Raimondi.

Reilly is the team’s leading scorer as he netted his 15th goal of the fall.

Goal keeper, Kelan Cardinal, improved to 9-1-1 in net as the junior made five saves. It was his eighth shutout of the year.

Lynnfield improved to 9-1-1 overall and 9-0-1 in the Cape Ann League with that win.

On Oct. 3, the Pioneers steamrolled host Triton, 5-0, up in Byfield to complete the season sweep over the Vikings.

This one was decided early as the Pioneers scored all five goals in the opening half and took their foot off the gas in the second half.

“They have a young team and were missing some players from the first time we played them,” pointed out Munroe, as his squad won the first meeting 4-0. “They played us a lot better that first time.”

Rocco Scenna led the offense scoring twice while single goals were scored by Brendan Sokop, Raimondi and Reilly.

Matt Reinold had a team-high two assists while Reilly had one to finish the day with three assists.

Cardinal played the first 60 minutes in goal and did not have to make a save. Sophomore Dino Gesamondo made his second appearance of the season in goal and did not face a shot playing the final 20 minutes in net.

On Oct. 14, the Pioneers host Essex Tech at 4 p.m. looking for the season sweep over the CAL newcomer Hawks.

Before the game, the four Pioneer seniors will be honored as it is also Lynnfield’s Senior Day.

The biggest game of the season will then take place on Oct. 16 as rival North Reading comes to town.

The two teams had a scoreless tie in their first meeting on Sept. 21 as first place in the CAL Kinney Division is on the line.

That game is at 4 p.m.
