WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield High girls’ varsity soccer team had an outstanding victory over Stoneham during the inaugural Wakefield Soccer Night this past Friday, securing a 2-0 win that left fans and players elated.
The game began on relatively level ground, but it didn’t take long for Wakefield to find their rhythm. There were numerous attempts on goal by Wakefield’s offensive players, with midfielders like junior Kayla Hurley and senior captain Fiona Recene keeping the Spartan goalie on her toes.
In the moments when Stoneham tried to take shots on net, senior goalkeeper Alexa Kelliher rose to the occasion with a series of remarkable saves. There was a point where Stoneham did manage to get the ball into Wakefield’s net, but it did not count as it was scored from an offside play.
The spirit of Wakefield youth soccer shone brightly as young players joined the team to enter the field at the start of the match and again at halftime for an entertaining scrimmage. It was evident that the varsity team put in the effort to inspire these budding soccer enthusiasts with their outstanding performance.
Wakefield’s first goal came a little over five minutes into the first half, courtesy of freshman Molly Burns, a promising talent to watch in the coming years. Her shot was nothing short of spectacular.
The defensive line played a pivotal role in thwarting Stoneham’s offensive efforts. Juniors Shea Suntken, Abby Myette and Megan Clark created an impenetrable barrier that frustrated Stoneham’s attempts to break through.
Wakefield’s second goal, sealed with less than 10 minutes remaining in the match, was delivered by Recene, solidifying Wakefield’s dominance on the field and defining the win.
Head coach Steph Martin was beyond proud of her team, sharing in a postgame discussion that “Obviously, we’re super happy to come out of it with a win tonight. We worked really hard in the second half.”
The team has been making great efforts throughout the season that is being visibly exhibited in their games and fans can’t wait to see how the team ends the season.
The Warriors tied Burlington 2-2 yesterday, bringing their overall record to 4-9-3. They host Watertown tomorrow at 4:15 p.m. and then Arlington Catholic on Monday in their regular season finale and senior night celebration at 6:30 p.m.
