AMESBURY — Last Friday afternoon, the Lynnfield High boys’ soccer team won at Amesbury 3-0. With that victory, the Pioneers improved to 13-2-1 overall and 12-1-1 in the Cape Ann League.
That win also clinched the Cape Ann League Kinney Division title.
Just four minutes into the game, Dhimitri Dono scored on a scrum after a free kick for the lone tally of the first half.
“Getting that early goal was a big deal,” said Pioneers head coach Brent Munroe.
The second goal took place in the 58th-minute as Dono headed in a corner kick by Joel Anthony.
Anthony then had the final one with a little over 10 minutes remaining in the game and that goal was unassisted.
“Dhimitri was great again,” said Munroe about the senior midfielder.
Pioneers goalkeeper, Kelan Cardinal, made two saves to go to 13-2-1 as he posted his 12th shutout of the year.
On Oct. 18, the Pioneers were upset 1-0 by visiting Rockport. That loss snapped the team’s five-game winning streak.
“We had a big let down after the big win over North Reading,” admitted Munroe. “I give Rockport credit and their goalie made two spectacular saves.”
Atticus Anderson was the hero for the Vikings scoring off a rebound of a free kick with just over 12 minutes left in the game.
Lynnfield was missing their top scorer Dillon Reilly, who injured his ankle against Essex Tech but did play in the North Reading game on Oct. 16.
“It is tough without Dillon, but it is no excuse for not winning that game,” said Munroe. “We controlled the play for most of the game.”
Reilly also missed the Amesbury game.
Cardinal made just one save against the Red Hawks.
On Oct. 28, the Pioneers wrap up the regular season as they host St. Mary’s of Lynn. That non-league game will start at 1 p.m.
Lynnfield entered this week seeded 3rd by the MIAA in Division 4. The top 32 teams at the end of the regular season automatically qualify for the states.
The seedings for the state tournament will come out in the middle of the week next week.
