One of Melrose’s finest efforts of season

MALDEN—The Melrose High girls’ swim team had an impressive performance against Lexington whom they traveled to on Oct. 18 and they put up outstanding times with several first place finishes that ended in a tight 82-71 loss to Melrose, but remains one of their best performances of the fall.

It was simply a day for senior captain Emilia Rahilly, who swept in the 200IM and 500 IM and was a part of Melrose’s first place 200 freestyle.

Melrose saw strong efforts to start the meet with a third place finish by the relay team of Lillian Blenk, Marta Francis, Nora Mounsif and Amara Otaluka.

Mayah Derosena and Amara Otaluka swam the 200 free and Sofia Cantwell swam the 200 IM. She would see teammate Rahilly sweep the event with a time of 2.37.37. Lexington would hold a 34-12 lead going into the 50 free, which saw swims from Fatima Mourchid, Lucy O’Neill, and Nora Mounsif. In the 100 butterfly Mayah Derosena and Tierra Pornkittichotcharoen placed 4th and 5th and Melrose saw swims by Lillian Blenk and Amara Otaluka in the 100 free.

Rahilly would also come in first in the 500 free with a great time of 6:11.43.

Says her coach, “Emilia has worked extremely hard throughout the past four years and it truly is showing in her senior year. Not only are her times improving, but she’s an exceptional captain to those around her.”

At press time, Melrose was expected to take part in the 2023 Middlesex League meet held on Thursday (post deadline) at Bentley University. Stay tuned.
