LYNNFIELD — The girls’ soccer team earned two decisive victories to close out the regular season last week.
Lynnfield (14-2-2) began last week defeating Pentucket 2-0 on Oct. 24.
Freshman Hannah Doherty, who was called up from the JV team, scored her first varsity goal with 12 minutes remaining in the first half. She scored off of a rebound after freshman Kaylee Barrett had a shot attempt.
“It’s great that Hannah scored her first varsity goal,” said Pioneers head coach Mark Vermont.
Freshman forward Ava Damiani gave Lynnfield a 2-0 lead with eight minutes remaining in the opening frame. Junior forward Bella Carroll and Doherty had the assists.
Senior captain Ava Gamache recorded four saves in net against the Panthers.
Vermont said Barrett, senior captain Ally Sykes, sophomore Bella Sykes and freshman Giada Antidormi played well in the midfield for the Pioneers. He also said senior captain Keely Briggs, freshman Avery Haney, junior Lily Rocco, junior Ariana Guarracino and junior Ella Hayman played excellent defensive games for Lynnfield.
“Pentucket is a strong team,” said Vermont. “It was a fight all the way to the end. The girls did a good job keeping their composure and moving the ball.”
Defeats Marblehead
The Pioneers kept rolling and defeated Marblehead 3-1 on Oct. 26.
Carroll gave Lynnfield a 1-0 lead after nailing a shot three minutes into the first half. Sophomore midfielder Hannah Ozanian had the assist.
“It was Bella’s 20th goal of the season,” said Vermont.
Antidormi nailed a shot 10 minutes into the opening frame after receiving a pass from Barrett.
“It was Giada’s first varsity goal,” said Vermont. “She has done a great job in the midfield for us all season, especially the last few weeks.”
The Magicians scored its only goal of the contest 14 minutes into the first half.
Damiani scored Lynnfield’s final goal off of a header with 10 minutes remaining in the game. Antidormi had the assist.
“Ava’s goal was huge for us,” said Vermont.
Gamache had nine saves in the cage against Marblehead.
“Ava played an outstanding game in net,” said Vermont. “She came up pretty big several times.”
Vermont said junior midfielder Morgan Hubbard played a good game against Marblehead.
“Morgan really helped us solidify the midfield,” said Vermont.
Vermont commended the Pioneers for earning a huge win over the Magicians.
“Marblehead is a very good Division 2 team,” said Vermont. “It was a huge team win. Marblehead is a very good team, and we came ready to play. The first two goals were huge for us. We played a strong game.”
