MELROSE—Six members of the Melrose High girls’ soccer team were named to the Middlesex League All-Star team.
Senior captain Ellie Deeble led the way as she made the team for the second year in a row and was named was named the MVP of the Middlesex League Freedom division. The forward, who also played center-midfielder earlier in the season, had nine goal and five assists. She was also a member of the First-Team eastern Mass. All-Stars.
Sophie McElligott made the all-star team for the second year in a row as well. The sophomore striker led the team in scoring as she had 14 goals and two assists. Like Deeble, she also made the eastern MA First Team All-Stars.
Another senior co-captain, Emily Lucien also made the all-star team for the second year in a row. The defenseman did have one assist as she spearheaded Melrose defense which was the best in the Freedom division. Lucien was also named to the eastern Mass. Second-Team All-Stars for the second year in a row. A third senior captain, goalkeeper Ava Tormo, made the all-star team for the third consecutive year. She went 11-3-2 in net as she only allowed four goals all year. She posted ten shutouts.
Two players made the all-star team for the first time, Jill Frawley and Abby Taylor.
Frawley is a junior defenseman while Taylor is a sophomore defenseman.
“That is the most players we have ever had that made the all-star team,” pointed out Melrose head coach Rob Mahoney. “It is a great accomplishment and it was nice to see that the league coaches recognized their accomplishments. I am proud of all of my players.”
It was a special year for Melrose as they reached the MIAA Div. 2 quarterfinal round before losing, 1-0, at Nashoba Regional to end the year at 16-3-2. In the Middlesex League, they captured their first-ever ML Freedom division title as they went 12-2-2 overall in the league.
