CANTON — It was a very successful Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day for the Lynnfield High boys hockey team on Monday afternoon as they blanked host Westwood, 7-0, at the Canton Ice House.

Will Norton had a game he will never forget as he scored a career-high six goals with four of them coming in the opening period.

“He has a lethal shot and he did a great job of picking his spots,” said Pioneers head coach Jon Gardner.

Owen Considine, who assisted on two of those goals, had the other Pioneer tally.

Dylan Damiani and Even Rocha both had two helpers while Aidan Norton and Jarret Scoppettuolo both had one assist.

Pioneer goalie Mike Marenghi, who went to 3-4 in net, had 13 stops to post his third shutout of the season.

Lynnfield improved to 4-6 overall with the non-league win while Westwood fell to 4-5.

“We ambushed them from the start and were able to bury them early,” said Gardner.

On Jan. 13, the Pioneers fell 3-1 to guest Newburyport at the McVann-O’Keefe Rink in Peabody.

With that defeat, the Pioneers fell to 2-2 in the Cape Ann League.

With just under five minutes left in the third period, a goal by Colby Arel gave the Clippers a 2-1 lead.

Lynnfield then had a couple of late power-play chances to tie the game but Tristan Joyce scored a empty-net tally in the final minute to close the door.

Newburyport improved to 6-2-1 with the win.

“It was a great game that I was proud to be a part of,” stated Gardner, despite the result. “I was proud of my guys.”

Lynnfield dominated in shots on goal, 33-13, as Marenghi made 10 saves.

The Clippers scored their first goal in the opening period that hit a defender’s skate and went into the net.

Lynnfield tied it in the second period as Jack Carpenter scored on a power play assisted by Joe Raffa and Aidan Norton.

The next game for the Pioneers is on Jan. 20 as they host Triton at noon. Lynnfield is looking to split the season series as the Vikings won the first meeting, 4-3, in the season opener back on Dec. 9.
