FOXBORO — On an unseasonably warm day on Monday with temperatures in the low 80’s, the North Reading High golf team traveled to Foxboro County Club to participate in the Division 3 state finals.
Of the 12 schools there, the Hornets placed 8th with a total score of 356. Ayer-Shirley won the event with a 331.
Leo Romanski led the way for the Hornets with a 12 over par 84 to place 11th overall. Max Forristall shot an 88 while Liam Blanchette and Conrad Gerber both scored a 92 to round out the team’s top four.
The other two scores were Jason Curran’s 93 and Tom Gazda’s 99.
“I thought the kids did great,” stated Hornet first-year head coach Jon Kiniry. “We practiced there last Saturday and the course is great. However, the greens are very tough.”
Kiniry went on to say that he is proud of his team and just getting to the finals was playing with house money.
This is the second year in a row that the Hornets made the state final.
Last Friday, the Cape Ann League Open took place at Far Corner in West Boxford. Romanski and Curran were the two Hornets represented.
For Romanski, it was a very memorable day as he won the event with a one-over-par 73.
“He had a great bounce-back round after the North Sectionals last Tuesday,” pointed out Kiniry, as there were 20 golfers there.
Curran placed ninth with a 79.
“I was proud of both of them,” said Kiniry. “Both of them finished in the top 10 against the best players in the league.”
