HAVERHILL — Last Saturday afternoon, the Lynnfield High boys’ hockey team edged host Pentucket, 3-2, at Haverhill High School’s Veterans Memorial Rink.
The win got the Pioneers back to the .500 mark at 6-6 overall. In the Cape Ann League, they improved to 4-3.
The Panthers, meanwhile, fell to 5-8 overall and 2-4 in the CAL.
Anthony Calla scored the game-winning goal with 13:12 left in the third period assisted by Owen Considine.
Pentucket had two power play opportunities later in the third to try to tie it and they also pulled their goalie with just under a minute left but the Pioneers were able to hold on.
The Panthers struck first with 4:39 remaining in the opening period as Aaron Wirwicz scored.
Lynnfield tied it on a Lucas Deraps tally with 1:14 left with Nick Kelter and Cole MacKinnon assisting.
Pentucket regained the lead on the power play in the second period as Chase Pelletier scored just 1:34 in.
The Pioneers then came out on fire in the third scoring twice in the first 1:38. Considine, the team’s top scorer, tied it just 45 seconds in assisted by Brendan Driscoll and Calla, setting up Calla’s heroics shortly after.
Lynnfield out-shot Pentucket 22-21 as Pioneer goalie, Angelo Covino, made 19 saves to go to 3-2.
“Angelo played well,” said Gardner. “He especially did a good job in the third when they had those power plays.”
Gardner was pleased with the patience his squad showed.
“We never got frustrated and came out hot in that third period,” he said.
The next game for the Pioneers is on Saturday as they host Newburyport at noon at the McVann-O’Keefe Rink in Peabody. Face-off is at noon.
The Clippers won the first meeting, 4-0, back on Jan.11 as the Pioneers are looking for a split of the season series.
On Feb. 3, Lynnfield visits non-league Dracut-Tyngsboro at the Tsongas Center in Lowell. That game will start at 7 p.m.
