LOWELL — The Lynnfield High boys’ hockey team lost their second game in a row on Monday night as they fell, 3-1, to host Dracut- Tyngsboro at the Tsongas Center in Lowell.

With that defeat, the Pioneers’ record dipped to 6-8 overall while the Middies improved to 11-2-2.

“We came out flat but played much better the final two periods,” said Pioneers head coach Jon Gardner. “We hit the post twice and had a couple of breakaways that we couldn’t capitalize on.”

After a scoreless opening stanza, the hosts scored on the power play 2:14 in as Matt Lesniak scored.

Lynnfield answered just 21 seconds later as Lucas Deraps scored assisted by Nick Kelter and Brendan Driscoll.

Ben Cardillo scored the eventual game-winning goal with 9:15 left in the second.

In the third, Gardner pulled goalie Angelo Covino with just under two minutes left but the Middies were able to score on the empty net with 55 second left as Brenden Modeski put the game away.

Lynnfield was out-shot 36-22 as Covino made 33 stops.

The Pioneers were also missing its top scorer, Owen Considine, who was sick.

Last Saturday afternoon, the Pioneers were shutout, 3-0, by guest Newburyport at the McVann-O’Keefe Rink in Peabody. It is the second time the Clippers have shut the Pioneers out this year as they won the first meeting, 4-0, back on Jan. 11.

The Clippers scored midway through the first period and scored their two other goals in the third.

“Their goalie (Damien Lamb) was the league MVP last year and he played big,” said Gardner.

Newburyport out-shot the Pioneers 28-22 as Lynnfield goalie, Mike Marenghi, made 25 stops.

Lynnfield fell to 4-4 in the Cape Ann League with the result.

The next game for the Pioneers will be on Wednesday as they take on host Gloucester at 6 p.m. at Talbot Rink.

Lynnfield beat the non-league Fishermen, 6-2, back on New Year’s Day at home.

The Pioneers then play host Amesbury at the Salem Ice Center in Salem, NH on Saturday. Face-off is 5 p.m.
