Cherished mother and grandmother

MELROSE — Carol A. (Thoms) Newell, 92, passed away peacefully on February 18. She was a longtime resident of Melrose. Carol was born on December 19, 1932 in Roslindale to the late Marjorie (Randall) and Henry Thoms. Carol married her high school sweetheart David E. Newell on February 7, 1953 and they remained happily married for 64 years until Dave’s death in 2017. They went on to have five cherished children. In addition to her family, Carol enjoyed playing bridge, bowling, ballroom dancing, traveling and spending time in the sun at the family’s summer home on Lake Winnisquam in NH. Always dressed in style, Carol enjoyed entertaining and was a gracious hostess to her many friends and family members over the years.

Adoring wife of the late David E. Newell. Loving mother of Jeffrey of Londonderry, NH; Lori Hopper and her husband Chris of Olympia, WA; Janice Bissex and her husband Donald of Melrose; and Diane Newell and her wife Nancy of Beaverton, OR. Carol was preceded in death by her daughter Denise Silvia. Dear sister of Shirley Thoms, Norman Thoms, Audrey Pugliesi and the late Henry Thoms and Roger Thoms. Cherished grandmother of Jenna, Julie, Jennifer, Nicole, David, Carolyn, Chelsea, Haley and the late Jake and Parker. Loving great-grandmother of Ava, Anthony, Avery, Gavin, Adalyn, Emmett, Elliot, Simon, Wyatt and Emory.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather for a celebration of Carol’s life at the Melrose Unitarian Universalist Church, 70 W. Emerson St., Melrose on Saturday, April 5 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Carol’s memory may be made to The Melrose Emergency Fund at epay.cityhallsystems.com/selection or a charity of your choice.
