Millward, Beaver earn boys’ hoop All-Star status

All-Stars Jack Millward and Matthew Beaver

WAKEFIELD — The Middlesex League’s boys’ basketball coaches met at the end of the season to vote on All-Stars.

Wakefield had two All-Stars: junior captain Jack Millward and senior captain Matthew Beaver.

Beaver earned an All-Star nod after averaging 11.3 points per game and 5.4 rebounds. The senior was a key leader for the Warriors and provided versatility on both ends of the floor as one of Wakefield’s best shooters, rebounders and defenders.

Millward was named to the five-man All-Conference team, picking up his second All-Star award. He was also named All-Conference as a sophomore last year. Millward averaged 27.9 points per game and 9 rebounds. He set the Wakefield High single game record for points, scoring 51 in a victory over Salem. Millward scored 40 or more points in four different games and broke the 1,000 career points mark against Beverly in the regular season finale.

“Jack and Matt were both a pleasure to coach,” said head coach Colin Halpin. “We relied on them to do so much for us all season both on and off the court.”

The Warriors went 10-10 in the regular season and earned the No. 20 seed in the Div. 2 state tournament. They fell to No. 13 seed Holyoke on the road in the first round.

Beaver will graduate after a terrific four-year varsity career.

Millward is set to transfer to the Rivers School in Weston.

“We appreciate all they did for the program and we will miss them next season,” said Halpin.
