After press time: North Reading defeats Triton 1-0 (April 10)

NORTH READING — It was a rough season-opener for the North Reading High softball team on April 2 as they lost to visiting Gloucester, 10-2, in a non-league contest.
“We have a pretty young team but we have a lot of potential,” said Hornets head coach Nicole Zimmerman. “We have had to move a couple of veterans to different positions this year.”
Gloucester scored in every inning except the second with the big innings coming with three-run homers in the top of the third and sixth.
“Those two home runs killed us,” admitted Zimmerman.
The Hornets’ two runs came in the bottom of the seventh.
Emilia Yeakel went all seven innings. The junior captain gave up seven earned runs, nine hits, five walks and she struck out 10.
The North Reading defense struggled committing four errors that led to three unearned Fishermen runs.
The Hornets had four hits led by Naomi Barber who went 2 for 3 with a walk. Jillian Corbett had a singe, three steals and knocked in one run.
Emily Cassarino had the team’s other hit.
The game at Essex Tech, scheduled for April 7, was rained out (no make-up date as of press time).
On Thursday, the Hornets host Pentucket. They then visit Ipswich on Monday. On Wednesday, April 16, they welcome Manchester-Essex. All three games will start at 4:30 p.m.
