First victory for Melrose in 19-7 Watertown rout

By STEPHEN MARTELLUCCI
MELROSE—The Melrose High softball team defeated guest Watertown, 19-7, in a 4.5 inning mercy-rule game on Apr. 4 at Pine Banks.
It was the first time Melrose has won since the 2023 season as they improved to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the Middlesex League. It was also the first-ever high school win for second-year head coach Stephen Turner.
“It was so great,” stated Turner. “Although I was very happy, I was happier for the girls. They had a look of relief.”
Maggie Turner and Abby Taylor led the way on offense. Turner was 1 for 2 with three walks and knocked in five runs. Taylor, meanwhile, also knocked in five runs as she was 1 for 4 with a two-run triple.
“Abby made contact and that allowed those runs to score,” pointed out coach Turner. “That is what we have emphasized that good things happen when we put the ball in play.”
Melrose Pitcher Emi Judge go her first varsity win in the circle. She pitched all five innings allowing six earned runs, five hits, six walks and she struck out eight.
Another positive for Melrose is that they only committed one error.
It was a nice bounce-back game after Melrose was blanked, 16-0, by guest Belmont on Apr. 2.
This game went five innings as Melrose was no-hit.
“They have some talented players and we struggled with the cold conditions,” said Turner.
Melrose will visit Wakefield on Apr. 11th. They will then play a non-league game at Danvers on Apr. 14th.
Melrose then returns to Middlesex League action on Apr. 15 as they host Burlington. All three games will start at 4:15 pm.
