Wins over Burlington & Wakefield highlight week

By STEPHEN MARTELLUCCI
MELROSE—The Melrose High girls lacrosse team are sitting pretty in the Middlesex Freedom league after back-to-back wins over league rivals Wakefield and Burlington last week, and an impressive win over Winchester prior to that.
Most recently, they beat guest Burlington,11-5, on Tuesday afternoon on a rainy day at Fred Green Field. With that win, Melrose improved to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the Middlesex League (2-0 Freedom).
This game was tight at the half as Melrose only led, 5-4. “We adjusted to their style of play and we were able to control the draws and find the holes in their defense,” said Melrose head coach Alicia Geiter.
Chloe Arnold, the team’s top scorer, had five goals and one assist while Jill Frawley recorded a hat trick.
Anna Mathews finished with four points as she had two goals and two assists. Ella Daniels had one goal and one assist to round out the scoring. Melrose goalie, Izzy Costello, made three saves in net to go to 4-1 on the season.
On Apr. 11, Melrose was even more impressive when they doubled up Wakefield, 18-9, on the road.
“We had a good start and were able to teak an early lead,” pointed out Geiter, whose team led 8-4 at the half. “I give Wakefield credit in that they never gave up.”
Arnold led the team in scoring again with five goals and one assist. Grace Daniels had seven points on the day with three goals and four assists. Frawley had a hat trick in this game as well.
Mathews and Julia McNeely both found the back of the Warrior net twice while Addie Healy and her sister, Lauren, each scored once. Kelly Downes had the other goal. Costello made 12 stops in net.
On Apr. 9, Melrose also beat Winchester, 14-5, at home. “That was a great win,” said Geiter. “Winchester has been a great program for many years so it is nice to beat a team like them.”
Melrose led this game 7-2 at the half.
Arnold scored seven times to go with one assists. Mathews also had a big day with four goals and three assists while Frawley had two goals and three helpers. Grace Daniels had the other goal. Costello made 12 stops in this game as well.
“Izzy was phenomenal,” stated Geiter.
The next two games for Melrose will be non-league ones as on Apr. 19, they visit Billerica at noon.
On Patriots Day next Monday, they visit Lynnfield at 9 am.
