LYNNFIELD — It was a tough day for the Lynnfield High softball team on Monday afternoon as they lost to guest Pentucket, 10-1, on a pleasant, sunny day.

With that defeat, the Pioneers fell to 2-5 overall and 2-1 in the Cape Ann League.

“They are the best team in our league,” stated Pioneers head coach Hector Longo, as the Panthers improved to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the league.

Pentucket scored two runs in the first inning, three in the fourth, four in the fifth and one more in the top of the sixth.

Lynnfield scored its run in the bottom of the first.

Gia Gagnon pitched 4.1 innings as she gave up seven earned runs, eight hits, seven walks and she struck out six.

“She has got to be able to throw more strikes,” said Longo.

The Lynnfield offense had only one hit off star pitcher Molly LeBel, who has recorded more than 600 strikeouts in her career.

“She has a great fastball and riseball,” said Longo.

LeBel went all seven innings allowing just one hit (Angela O’Hara’s single in the fifth). She walked four and fanned 10.

Libby Considine scored the lone run on a wild pitch when she was at third. She reached base with a walk.

On Wednesday, the Pioneers go to Ipswich for a 3:30 p.m. start. That will be the first of four games in six days for Lynnfield. They go to Byfield on Friday to take on Triton at 4 p.m. On Saturday, they host Triton in a make-up game with that one starting at 10 a.m.

On May 5, the Pioneers visit Newburyport at 4 p.m.

Lynnfield is looking for the season sweep against Newburyport as they won the first meeting, 16-6, back on April 9.
