Girls’ outdoor track team opens season with two road wins

DANVERS — The NRHS girls’ track and field team opened up their outdoor season with back-to-back victories on the road over Newburyport (85-60) and Essex Tech (108.66-36.33) on April 9 and April 16. The Hornets have already established themselves as the favorites for the Cape Ann League Championship with these impressive wins, with two more regular season matchups versus Triton (Tuesday after press time) and Pentucket (May 7) on the schedule. Both of those meets will be contested at home.

Leading the Hornets in both victories were the triumvirate captains Giuliana Ligor, Callie MacLellan and Hayden MacLellan.

Ligor was a triple winner in both meets winning the 400 Meter Hurdles, 100 Meter Hurdles and 200 Meters against Newburyport and the 400M Hurdles, 100M and 200M against Essex Tech.

Callie MacLellan won the High Jump at both meets and was runner up in the 400M Hurdles in both meets while taking 2nd in the 800 Meters against Newburyport and won the 100M Hurdles against Essex Tech.

Hayden MacLellan was a double winner in both the Long Jump and Pole Vault at both meets and took 2nd in the 100 Meter Hurdles in both.

All three Hornets have hit state qualifying marks in their respective events.

In the throwing events, Sydney Scholz, Jacquelyn Genzler, Sophia Gallivan, Miriana Bornstein and Mia Karafilidis have scored valuable points for the Hornets. Sydney and Jacquelyn in the Javelin Throw and Shot Put, Sophia in the Javelin Throw, and Miriana and Mia in the Discus. Sydney and Sophia have both qualified for the state championship in the Javelin Throw while Miriana and Mia have both qualified for the Discus Throw and Jackie and Sydney are within a foot of qualifying for the Shot Put.

In the jumping events, Kate Denehy (Triple Jump), Chloe DeAngelis (Triple Jump and Pole Vault), Katie Zimmerman (Long Jump), Elizabeth Sandovich (Pole Vault and Long Jump), Giuliana Auciello (High Jump), and Madelyn Favuzza (High Jump) have hit impressive marks and added to the team’s victories. Kate and Chloe have hit state qualifying marks in the Triple Jump, Katie and Elizabeth have done the same in the Long Jump while Giuliana and Madelyn are just 2 inches off of the state qualifying mark of  5’ 0” for the High Jump.

On the oval, Quinlan Kelly, Adelyn Kelly, Riley MacDonald and Paige Vant have been holding it down for the Hornets. Quinlan and Paige have run impressive doubles in the Mile and 800 Meters while Adelyn and Riley have focused their attention on the Two Mile. The Hornets now have three 800 Meter state qualifiers in Quinlan, Paige and Callie MacLellan. Riley and Adelyn are also not far off from the Two Mile qualifying mark.

Also scoring points for the Hornets over the past two meets were Katie Attwood (Mile), Erin Dee (Discus Throw), Shea Farmer (400 Meters), Julia Scammon (100 Meters) and Hannah Frew (Pole Vault), all of whom are looking to hit improved performances over the coming weeks.

The Hornets’ home meet versus Triton, which took place on Tuesday after press time, as well as performances from the upcoming invitationals scheduled for May 3 at Ipswich (Freshman Sophomore Meet) and Weston (Weston Twilight Meet) will be covered in future Transcript Articles.
