WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield High boys’ tennis team picked up their 4th and 5th wins of the season last week, beating Watertown on April 29 and Wilmington on April 30 by identical 4-1 scores.

Wakefield’s trek to the Victory Field Courts in Watertown was the perfect way to bounce back from a hard-fought 3-2 loss to Burlington nearly two weeks earlier as the Warriors had April Vacation week off.

Wakefield swept Watertown in the three singles matchups.

Senior captain Luke Greif cruised at first singles, 6-0, 6-1.

Senior Trevor Veilleux won at second singles, 6-1. 6-3.

Senior captain Kevin DeGray swept his third singles opponent, 6-0, 6-0.

The Warriors made it 4-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at first doubles from seniors Kip King and Ahmed Othman.

Junior Connor Sliski and senior Gus Sanni won seven games at second doubles but fell short, 6-3, 6-4.

Wakefield returned home to the Dobbins Courts the next day and defeated Wilmington. The victory was Wakefield’s fourth in their last five matches.

Greif had one of his tougher matchups of the season at first singles against Sanjeev Puvanendrakumar but Greif stayed undefeated with a 6-3, 6-2 win.

DeGray made quick work in the first set before battling to finish it up, 6-0, 6-4 at third singles.

Veilleux’s match at second singles was the longest of the day. After winning set one, 7-5, Veilleux fell 6-4 in set two, creating a 10-point tiebreaker for set three which Veilleux won, 10-4.

Sliski and Liam Kelley won at second doubles, 6-2, 6-4 while Othman and King fell at first doubles in a hard fought, 6-4, 6-4 match.

Since those two wins, Wakefield has suffered two losses to Middlesex League Liberty Division opponents, Winchester and Belmont. Wakefield is now 4-4 on the season.

Winchester proved to be a tough matchup per usual as they won 4-1 on Friday at the Dobbins Courts.

Greif continued his terrific season with a 6-1, 6-4 win at first singles for Wakefield’s only victory of the day.

Winchester won the doubles matches, 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0 but Wakefield singles players were more competitive. Veilleux fell 6-4, 6-2 at second singles and DeGray 6-3, 6-3 at third singles.

The Warriors were much closer to a victory in Belmont yesterday as the Marauders escaped with a 3-2 win.

Greif swept his first singles opponent, 6-0, 6-0 and Veilleux got the other win, 6-2, 6-4 at second singles.

DeGray came very close to winning it for Wakefield at third singles. He earned a thrilling 7-5 win in the first set before falling 6-3 in set two to force a deciding third where he came up just short, 6-3.

Wakefield’s doubles teams both fell again, 6-2, 6-2 at first doubles and 6-1, 6-0 at second doubles.

The Warriors have two more tough, Liberty Division opponents coming up this week. Altogether, Wakefield is playing four days in a row with matchups against Lexington today (4:15 p.m., home), Reading tomorrow (4 p.m., away) and Melrose on Friday (4:15 p.m., home).

The Warriors were ranked No. 20 in the latest Div. 3 power rankings which were released yesterday.
