Hornets move to 3-0 with win over Triton

IPSWICH — In a commanding display of athletic prowess and team depth, the North Reading girls’ track and field team ran away with the top spot at the recent CAL Frosh Championship Meet held at Ipswich High on Saturday, amassing an impressive 188 points—more than double the total of runner-up Newburyport (88 points). Essex Tech claimed third with 65 points, followed by Triton (47.33) and Ipswich (47).
From sprints to distance, jumps to throws, North Reading dominated across the board, securing the team title with standout performances in nearly every event.
One of the highlights of the day came in the 4×100-meter relay, where the quartet of Kate Denehy, Madison Forbush, Elizabeth Sandovich, and Sophia Gallivan raced to first place with a time of 53.09 seconds, finishing well ahead of their nearest competitors.
North Reading also impressed in the field events, particularly in the throwing disciplines. Sydney Scholz was dominant, winning both the shot put with a personal record throw of 33 feet, 11 inches, and the javelin throw with another personal best of 103 feet, 3 inches. Teammate Maria Karafilidis backed her up by placing second in shot put and winning the discus throw at 86 feet, 2 inches.
In the distance events, Adelyn Kelly and Kathryn Attwood swept the top two spots in the 2-mile, clocking 13:19.90 and 14:59.72, respectively. Paige Vant also had a strong showing in the mile, placing fifth with a time of 5:56.04, followed closely by Riley MacDonald in ninth.
North Reading sprinters contributed solid performances as well. In the 200 meters, Annika Molla led the squad with a time of 30.04 seconds, with Madison Forbush and Maya Grossi close behind. Freshman Kayla Faulkner also broke into the top half with a time of 31.57 seconds.
In the 400 meters, Shea Farmer crossed the line third overall with a strong time of 1:08.71, while Julia Petrosino added more team points with a solid 1:14.04 finish. The 4×400-meter relay team of Shea Farmer, Lily Galvin, Paige Vant, and Chloe DeAngelis finished fifth overall at 4:39.22.
North Reading’s hurdlers also had standout results. Lindsey Cook placed 4th in the 400m hurdles with a personal-best 1:15.88, and jumped to second place in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 10 inches, tying the winning height on attempts.
In the throws, North Reading dominated. Beyond Scholz and Karafilidis’s wins, Willow Koepke contributed to the team’s sweep in the javelin with an 89-foot toss for third place. Adrianna Driscoll, Lukaina Noel, and Kelsey Quinn all earned top-10 finishes in the throws, showing depth across the roster.
Lastly, in the 800 meters, Sina Nickerson led the North Reading runners with a 14th-place finish at 3:00.01, followed by Gabrielle Montanye and Jemma Hanegraaff. The team also finished fourth in the 4×800-meter relay with a time of 12:24.69.
The Hornets and Triton squared off in a competitive and spirited dual meet that saw athletes from both schools shine across the board on April 30 at NRHS. With standout performances in sprints, distance races, relays, jumps, throws, and hurdles, the meet highlighted the depth and talent of both programs.
Giuliana Ligor opened her day with a decisive win in the 100 meters, clocking in at 12.94 seconds.
Ligor returned to dominate the 200m with a blazing 25.56, nearly three seconds ahead of the next finisher. North Reading’s Julia Scammon clocked a season-best 30.08 for fifth. In a thrilling 400m race, Callie MacLellan surged to first with a personal best of 1:01.24. North Reading’s Abigail Meier and Julia Petrosino placed fourth and seventh, respectively.

Triton senior Avery Upite showcased her strength in the 800, running a personal-best 2:22.34. North Reading freshman Paige Vant (2:32.70 PR) and junior Quinlan Kelly (2:35.67) followed in second and third.
Triton senior Ava Burl dominated the mile, finishing in 5:29.41. North Reading’s Kelly continued her strong day with a PR of 5:35.71 for second. Vant added another top-five finish in fourth. One of the most exciting races came in the 2-mile, where Jaworski edged out teammate Burl by just 0.06 seconds — 13:02.75 to 13:02.81. Adelyn Kelly (13:17.71) and Riley MacDonald (13:39.54) secured third and fourth.
Hayden MacLellan cruised to victory in 16.75 in the 100m hurdles. Katie Zimmerman (18.70 SR) and Giuliana Auciello (19.42) gave North Reading depth in the hurdles, while freshman Madelyn Favuzza rounded out the field in 23.81. Ligor picked up her third win of the day with a commanding 1:02.65, setting a school record in the 400m hurdles. MacLellan followed with a 1:04.59, giving North Reading a 1-2 finish.
Scammon, Forbush, Denehy, and Zimmerman finished a strong second in 53.12 in the 4×100 relay.
