FYACS expanding its pottery studio

MELROSE — Initially built as an addition to The Big Yellow House in 2022, the current Ceramics Studio at FYACS can accommodate up to six students at a time with four potters wheels and a hand-building table. In just three years, more than 400 new and experienced potters of all ages have taken part in Follow Your Art’s pottery programs, led by skilled instructors who have helped grow a supportive and talented community of potters.

With more people wanting to take pottery classes close to home, FYACS is now working toward tripling the capacity of its pottery studio.

Renovations started in late 2024, thanks to a generous capital grant from the Adelaide Breed Bayrd Foundation and construction work by Matt Roman and his team. Expected to be completed later this summer, The Pottery at FYACS will include 12 pottery wheels and more space for hand-building. With the added space, FYACS will be able to grow its programming to include intermediate and advanced instruction, open studio time and more specialty options.

“We’re so excited to respond to the community’s desire for more ceramics with this expansion of The Pottery Studio at FYACS. For anyone who has wanted to try wheel-throwing but has been faced with a waitlist, or is ready for more advanced classes close to home, we are almost there!” shared Ceramics Studio Manager Jessica Mitchell.

Follow Your Art Community Studios is asking for the community’s assistance in completing the renovation and spreading the word about the new pottery studio. Donations are gratefully accepted to help finish and equip the new space and FYACS is also seeking volunteers to help with painting and building shelves. Please contact ceramics@fyamelrose.org if you are able to help!
