LYNNFIELD — On Monday afternoon, the Lynnfield High softball team climbed back to the .500 mark as they rolled over Boston Latin Academy, 12-1, at home on a warm, sunny day.
With the non-league win, the Pioneers improved to 7-7 overall.
This game was tight until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Pioneers erupted for nine runs.
Lilly Gately was the winning pitcher going all seven innings. The freshman gave up one run, three hits, five walks and she struck out seven.
“She was really good all day,” said Pioneers head coach Hector Longo, as Gately improved to 4-2.
The Lynnfield offense had nine hits led by Morgan Hubbard who went 2 for 3 with a walk and two runs batted in. Olivia Kelter and Kaila George were both 2 for 4 at the dish. George knocked in two runs while Kelter homered in the bottom of the first inning.
Angela O’Hara had the big blow in the sixth with a three-run triple to center.
Last Saturday, the Pioneers were edged, 12-11, by Essex Tech at home in eight innings.
This game was scheduled to be played the day before at Essex Tech but was moved to Lynnfield because of the turf and the Hawks were the home team as they batted last.
The Hawks plated three runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull out the win.
“That was a tough one to lose,” admitted Longo, whose squad fell to 6-6 in the Cape Ann League. “I give them credit with the way they came back. We did play them a lot better than the first time we faced them this year.”

The Hawks won the first meeting, 19-5, back on April 10.
Lynnfield’s offense had 14 hits led by Gia Gagnon who went 4 for 5. Libby Considine was 3 for 4 with one RBI while O’Hara went 3 for 5 with a team-high four RBI as her big hit was a three-run double.
Hubbard was the team’s other multiple hitter going 2 for 5 with two runs scored.
Gagnon pitched 7.1 innings giving up nine earned runs, 14 hits, four walks and she fanned five.
On May 7, the Pioneers beat Manchester-Essex, 5-3, at home.
Gagnon was the winning pitcher going all seven innings. She gave up one earned run, one hit, four walks and struck out seven Hornets.
“We got down, 3-0, early but she was excellent and kept us in the game despite some early errors we committed,” said Longo.
Lynnfield scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings and then scored once in the bottom of the sixth.
The offense had 10 hits led by Hubbard who was a perfect 3 for 3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
O’Hara went 2 for 3 with one run and one RBI while Gagnon was 2 for 3 helping her own cause.
On Wednesday, the Pioneers host North Reading at 4:30 p.m. They then welcome Rockport the next day at 4 p.m.
Lowell Catholic comes to town on Saturday at 10 a.m. for a non-league game.
On May 19, the Pioneers return to CAL action as they visit Amesbury at 4 p.m. The next day, they go to Pentucket with that game starting at 4:45 p.m.
The Pioneers entered this week ranked 21st in the MIAA Division 4 power rankings. The top 32 teams at the end of the regular season automatically qualify for the tournament regardless of overall record.
