Girls’ track team wins 11th straight CAL title

NORTH READING — The North Reading High School girls’ track and field team delivered a commanding performance on May 6, claiming victories across multiple events and showcasing the depth and talent of their roster in a high-energy meet against Pentucket. The victory brings the team record to 4-0 and secures the Cape Ann League Kinney Division Championship — the 11th straight CAL Championship for the Hornets as they’ve won every CAL title dating back to 2014.
Senior Giuliana Ligor led the charge, delivering a trio of standout wins. Ligor blazed to victory in the 400 meters with a time of 59.53 seconds, and continued her dominance by capturing first in both the 100-meter hurdles (14.68) and the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.24). Her efforts not only secured three golds but anchored North Reading’s stronghold in the hurdles and mid-distance events.
In the 100 meters, sophomore Kate Denehy took 2nd place in 13.95, and later captured gold in the triple jump with a leap of 33-08.00. Fellow sprinter Madison Forbush earned 3rd in the 100m (14.25) and added another 3rd-place finish in the 200 meters (29.51).
North Reading’s relay teams also proved formidable. The varsity 4×100-meter relay squad—Julia Scammon, Madison Forbush, Kate Denehy, and Katie Zimmerman—flew around the track to finish first in 52.88 seconds, beating Pentucket’s top team by nearly a second.
Distance events showcased more green-and-gold dominance. Junior Quinlan Kelly won the 800 meters in 2:29.84, and finished runner-up in the mile (5:50.07). Freshman Paige Vant added depth with a 2nd-place finish in the 800 (2:34.38) and 3rd in the mile (5:53.09). Sophomore Adelyn Kelly claimed the top spot in the 2-mile, clocking in at 13:22.10, followed by teammate Kathryn Attwood in 2nd (14:26.56).
On the field, Hayden MacLellan captured first in the long jump (17-00.00) and took 3rd in the 100-meter hurdles (16.75). She also tied for the top height in pole vault (10-00.00). The high jump saw Callie MacLellan clear 4-10.00 for gold, while Giuliana Auciello and Lindsey Cook followed closely with 4-08.00 each.
North Reading was equally successful in the throws. Sophomore Sydney Scholz launched the shot put 34-01, securing first place, while Miriana Bornstein earned top honors in the discus (87-02). In the javelin, North Reading swept the podium with Willow Koepke (88-06), Jacquelyn Genzler (87-03), and Sophia Gallivan (86-05) leading the way.
The Hornets also closed the meet with a strong 2nd-place finish in the 4×400-meter relay, featuring Chloe DeAngelis, Paige Vant, Shea Farmer and Abigail Meier, who combined for a time of 4:31.82.
With athletes shining across sprints, distance, jumps, and throws, North Reading proved they are a formidable contender as the postseason approaches.
Coach Sotirios Pintzopoulos praised the team’s effort and depth, noting, “This group continues to raise the bar week after week and year after year.”
