Girls’ lacrosse beats Boston Latin in 20th anniversary game

NORTH READING — It was a great day for the North Reading High girls’ lacrosse team last Saturday afternoon as, not only did they have their 20th season anniversary game, but they also won it beating guest Boston Latin Academy, 14-3, on a warm, pleasant day.

With the non-league victory, the Hornets improved to 9-8 overall.

This game turned into a rout early on as North Reading led, 10-0, after the first quarter.

Eva Cannalonga led the Hornet attack with three goals and one assist while Lindsey Rosenthal scored twice.

Single Hornets goals were scored by Madison Hopfer, Makenzie Murphy, Addie Hajj, Alaina Driscoll, Willow Reyen, Sophia El-Sheikh, Avery Keller, Kara Russell and Mikaela O’Driscoll who also had one assist.

“We came out hot from the start and the girls did a good job of placing their shots,” said Hornets head coach Matt Costello. “With it being our anniversary game it was a positive day for our program.”

Hornet goalie, Cara Ward made three saves as she played the first three quarters not allowing any goals. Ward, a sophomore, also recorded her 100th save of her career during the game.

Bella Mawn took over in net in the fourth quarter and made two saves.

On May 15, the Hornets lost, 10-7, at home to Pentucket. The Panthers were able to complete the season sweep as they beat the Hornets, 16-5, back on April 15 in the first meeting.

North Reading fell to 4-8 in the Cape Ann League with the loss.

“They have a lot of talented players, some of whom, who are going to big colleges to play next season,” said Costello, about the Panthers.

“We were very competitive with them.”

Pentucket led 4-3 at the half as the Hornets were outscored, 6-4, in the second half.

Driscoll led the Hornet offense with two goals. Cannalonga had one goal and one assist while Hajj, O’Driscoll, El-Sheikh and Russell had one goal. Russell’s goal was on an eight-meter shot.

Ward made two saves in this game.

The Hornets hosted Georgetown in the regular-season finale on Wednesday (results not available at press time).

Entering this week, the Hornets were seeded 17th in the MIAA Division 4 power rankings. The top 32 teams at the end of the regular season automatically qualify for the tournament regardless of their record.

On May 28, the Hornets will find out who they will open with in the state tournament.
