NORTH READING — The North Reading High girls’ tennis team was edged, 3-2, by visiting Melrose on Tuesday afternoon on a cool, cloudy day. With the non-league defeat, the Hornets’ record dipped to 9-9 overall.

“We played a solid match but just couldn’t pick up that third point,” said North Reading head coach Matt Tiberii.

Althea Bradley won at first singles, 6-1, 6-0, while Matilda Ton won, 6-2, 6-1, at second singles.

Shenaya Verma played at third singles and she lost, 6-3, 6-4.

In doubles action, the first team of Aniya Taneja and Addison Stetson fell, 6-2, 6-1. The second team of Karina Mountain and Mary Doble also lost in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

It was also the Hornets Senior Day as the four 12th-graders were honored.

“I wanted to make sure that all four of them played,” said Tiberii.

Bradley, Taneja, Stetson and Mountain are the four seniors.

The day before, the Hornets lost, 5-0, at Hamilton-Wenham. With that loss, North Reading fell to 6-7 in the Cape Ann League as they finished in third place in the CAL Kinney Division behind Lynnfield and Newburyport.

“They have won the Division 4 state title the last three years,” pointed out Tiberii of the Generals. “They will be one of the top teams in Division 4 again in the tournament.”

Ton played first singles and lost, 6-1, 6-1. Verma fell, 6-1, 6-0, at second singles while Ava Peake lost, 6-0, 6-0, at third singles.

Doble and Juliet Wasilewski fell, 6-1, 6-3, at first doubles while Trisha Goel and Alisha Subramani lost, 6-0, 6-0, at second doubles.

On May 15, the Hornets lost, 5-0, at Lynnfield as the Pioneers swept the season series.

“Besides Hamilton-Wenham, Lynnfield is the best team we have played this year,” said Tiberii.

Bradley lost, 6-1, 6-2, at first singles while Ton fell, 7-5, 6-2, at second singles.

Verma lost in straight sets as well, 6-4, 6-0, at third singles.

Stetson and Taneja lost, 7-5, 6-1, while Doble and Wasilewski fell, 6-4, 6-1.

“We were a little more competitive that we were the first time we played them,” pointed out Tiberii.

On May 14, the Hornets were edged, 3-2, by Newburyport at home. The Clippers also swept the Hornets this spring.

Bradley won, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 as the final set was a 10-game pro set. Ton won, 6-1, 7-5, at second singles.

Mountain played at third singles and lost, 6-0, 6-1.

Doble and Wasilewski lost, 7-5, 6-3, at first doubles while Angelina Zeng and Sara Barbagallo lost, 6-1, 6-0, at second doubles.

“We did fight hard that match,” said Tiberii.

The Hornets are seeded 20th in the MIAA Division 3 power rankings heading into this week. The top 32 teams at the end of the regular season automatically qualify for the tournament regardless of their overall record.

The seedings are slated to come out on May 23 as the Hornets will open the tournament on the road some time later next week.
