Softball team gets ready for state tournament

LYNNFIELD — It was a rough end to the regular season for the Lynnfield High softball team as they were shut out in their final two games.
On May 23, the Pioneers lost, 9-0, at home to Wakefield on a cool, cloudy day.
With that non-league defeat, the Pioneers ended up at 10-10 overall.
“It was a good game until the fifth inning when they blew it open,” said Pioneers head coach Hector Longo.
The 14-4 Warriors led, 1-0, going into the top of the sixth They then scored thee times in the sixth and plated five more runs in the top of the seventh to pull away.
Gia Gagnon went five-plus innings giving up four earned runs, nine hits, one walk and she struck out three.
The Pioneer offense had just one hit as Lilly Gately had a single in the fifth inning.
“Their pitcher (Kayla Shaw) threw well and was overpowering,” said Longo, as Shaw walked two and struck out 13.
“They are a very good Division 2 team,” said Longo, as the Warriors are two divisions above the Pioneers.
In their final Cape Ann League game of the season on May 20, the Pioneers were blanked, 14-0 at Pentucket in a five-inning mercy-rule game.
“They are head-and-shoulders the best team in the league,” stated Longo, about the 17-2 Panthers who won the CAL Kinney Division. “They are going to be a very dangerous team in Division 3.”
Pentucket completed the season sweep over the Pioneers as they won the first match-up, 10-1, back on April 28.
Panthers star pitcher Molly LeBel no-hit the Pioneers.
“She was in control the whole game,” said Longo, about the senior.
Pentucket scored once in the first inning, three times in the second, six times in the third and five more times in the bottom of the fourth.
Gagnon started and went three innings. She gave up one earned run, eight hits, three walks and she fanned three.
Lynnfield finished at 9-7 in the CAL and came in fifth place in the CAL Kinney Division.
On May 28, Lynnfield will find out who they will open with in the Div. 4 state tournament. They will be on the road and should start play some time at the end of the week.
The Pioneers entered this week seeded 20th in the MIAA Div. 4 power rankings.
