Baseball team finishes stellar regular season at 16-4

LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield High baseball team concluded their regular season this weekend in the annual Brendan Grant Memorial Baseball Tournament. After beating Burlington 4-1 in the first round on Friday — a game moved over from Belmont High to Lynnfield’s turf field due to the weather — the Pioneers fell to Reading 4-1 in the championship game. The loss to the Rockets was the first Pioneer defeat since April 22, snapping a 13-game winning streak as Lynnfield finished the regular season at 16-4.
Against the Red Devils on Friday, Lynnfield got on the board in the 3rd inning, scoring a run on a double play.
After Burlington tied it in the top of the 6th, the Pioneers rallied with three in the bottom half.
Walter Radulski drove home Nick Groussis and Madux Iovinelli who had previously singled and walked, respectively. Matt Tracy earned a walk and an RBI with the bases loaded to make it 4-1.
Radulski started for Lynnfield in this one and finished it up in the 7th with a complete game victory. He allowed just two hits, one walk and one run while fanning five over 7 frames. He was backed up by strong defense as the Pioneers didn’t commit an error.
Lynnfield hosted the championship game as well, their turf field the perfect antidote for more rainy weather.
A pitcher’s dual between Iovinelli (4IP, 2H, 0ER, 2BB, 4K) and Reading starter Ethan Lebovidge highlighted a scoreless first three innings. Reading, who entered the game on a seven-game winning streak of their own, put up one in the 4th and three in the 5th after Iovinelli exited to take a 4-0 lead.
The Pioneers, who had completed multiple comebacks during their 13-game winning streak, were undaunted, scoring one in the 5th after Tracy doubled and Charlie Morgan brought him home with a base hit but Lebovidge got out of it with two grounders and the Pioneers couldn’t get any more runs across in the final two innings as the Rockets took home the Brendan Grant Tournament trophy.
That loss won’t affect Lynnfield’s No. 2 ranking in Div. 4 as the Rockets (17-3) were ranked No. 3 in Div. 2. The brackets for the Div. 4 state tournament were released on Wednesday after press time. With such a high ranking, Lynnfield will be able to host multiple tournament games if they can advance.
