Memorial Day thank you

Gayle-Jean Angelo, Director of the VSO and Bob Driscoll, Chair of the VAB would like to thank the following individuals and groups for their participation in our four Memorial Day events.

First, for their continued support of our semi-annual food drive, we would like to thank Shaw’s supermarket personnel: Ken McGinnis, store manager, Sharon Piccirilli, customer service manager, and many of Shaw’s other staff members; and the two food pantry recipients: A Servant’s Heart and Jana’s The Food Drive, who assisted us during a very successful day.

Second, we would like to thank Veterans’ Memorial Middle School Principal Josh Murphy, the school staff, and the talented students and speakers for their meaningful assembly. Also, our gratitude goes to Deb Walz and her volunteers who prepare and serve a wonderful and cost-free breakfast to our veterans twice yearly.

Third, to the many Scout troops, families, individuals, and civic organizations who helped us decorate veteran grave sites with new flags and who participated in our flag retirement ceremony. A special nod goes to Deb Walz, Kathy Childress, and Mayor Grigoraitis who properly readied and disposed of spent flags into the pit, Scout Master Ken Fung who assisted in collecting used flags and distributing new ones around the cemetery. Also, thank you to the Melrose Republican City Committee members under the leadership of Chair Paul Schille, to the many Melrose Scout Troops, and to those families and individuals who made sure that each veteran grave was properly adorned with a flag. Finally, to those scouts and to Melrose VSO, David Goss, for ensuring that our flag retirement ceremony was respectful and fitting.

Finally, our sincere gratitude to our featured speakers: Mayor Grigoraitis and police Lieutenant Brian Ladner and his guests, the family of David Bingham (a US Marine who lost his life in Vietnam), and musicians: singer, high school student Paige Trenoth and bugler, former Melrose Mayor Gail Infurna who made our remembrance ceremony at the Knoll profound and appropriate for the day.
