Bats come alive in baseball team’s 15-5 first round win over Amesbury

LYNNFIELD — For one and one half innings, it appeared as though the Lynnfield baseball team was on upset alert.
With the 4-16 and 31st ranked Amesbury Red Hawks up 3-0 going into the bottom of the 2nd, the 16-4 and 2nd-ranked Pioneers didn’t panic, even though they needed a walk-off to beat Amesbury back on May 15 and the visitors were now playing with plenty of confidence in the first round of the Div. 4 state tournament on Monday at LHS.
Panic, Lynnfield did not.
The Pioneers responded with 4 runs in the 2nd and went on to score in every single inning, adding 4 each in the 5th and 6th frames to end the game 15-5 via the mercy rule.
Lynnfield racked up 11 hits in this one with every batter in the lineup collecting at least one. Senior captain Madux Iovinelli and junior Dylan Nguyen led the way with 2 hits and an RBI each. Senior captain Nick Groussis had a team-high 3 RBI and junior captain Drew George and senior Charlie Morgan each chipped in 2 RBI.
Senior Walter Radulski entered the game in the 2nd, helping hold Amesbury to one run in that inning and let his offense go to work. Radulski finished the game to earn the win. He scattered 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3 and only allowing one earned run in 4.2 frames.
It was George who emphatically snapped Lynnfield and their hometown fans out of the 3-0 shocking start with a solo shot to left in the bottom of the 2nd. Three base hits by junior Matt Tracy, Nguyen and Morgan made the score 3-2. A groundout tied the game and Groussis put the home team in front with an RBI double.
The Red Hawks kept at it in the 3rd, reclaiming the lead with two more runs but Lynnfield once again responded adding two of their one in the bottom half for a wild, 6-5 lead after three entertaining innings.
Radulski led off Lynnfield’s 3rd with a double and after a walk, bunt and hit batter, the bases were loaded. Lynnfield scored on an error at short and took the lead on a gutsy sacrifice squeeze by Morgan, scoring George and setting off an epic Pioneer celebration.
That play stole all the momentum from Amesbury as Radulski settled in. He sat the Red Hawks down in order in the 4th and the 5th. Lynnfield added one in the 4th and broke the game open with four in the 5th. Those runs were all scored with two outs as the Pioneers rallied, an RBI single by junior captain Luke DiSilvio leading to an error that made it 9-5 and another RBI knock by George.
Lynnfield wasted no time in ending things during the 6th inning. Nguyen led off with a single, Morgan was hit by a pitch and an RBI single by senior captain Ty Adamo made it 12-5. Another Amesbury error pushed the lead to 14-5 and a ground out later brought home Groussis as the Pioneers celebrated their first of what they hope is many playoff wins.
Lynnfield will host No. 18 Stoneham (7-13) in a Round of 16 matchup on Thursday at 1 p.m. The Spartans beat No. 15 Abington 3-1 in the first round. The winner will move onto the quarterfinals where they will play the winner of No. 7 East Bridgewater vs. No. 10 Northbridge.
