MEDWAY — It was a successful playoff opener for the North Reading High boys’ lacrosse team on June 1 as the Hornets beat Medway, 11-4, on the road in the MIAA Division 4 state tournament.

North Reading didn’t let the over-an-hour bus ride affect them early as they led, 4-0, at the half.

“The kids played really, really well,” said Hornets head coach Chuck Campobasso. “They executed the things that we have been working on in practice well.”

Dylan O’Driscoll led the Hornet attack with three goals and three assists while PJ Conte led the team in goals with four.

Finn Rodger and Brendan Gazda both had one goal and one assist while Conrad Gerber and Gavin Wesley found the back of the Mustang net once.

Hornet goalie David Tran, made eight saves to improve to 10-8.

“Our defense was outstanding, especially Andrew Taylor,” stated Campobasso.

Taylor, a senior, covered the Mustangs top scorer and shut him down completely holding him scoreless.

With that victory, the 19th-seeded Hornets improved to 10-9. The 14th-seeded Mustangs, meanwhile, ended the 2025 campaign at 9-10.

North Reading visited 3rd-seeded Norwell in the Round of 16 on Wednesday (result not available at press time). Norwell entered that game at 13-6.

If the Hornets pulled off the upset, they will play in the quarterfinals sometime this weekend.
