NORTH READING —  It was one-and-done for the North Reading softball team in the MIAA Division 3 playoffs this year as the Hornets lost, 7-3, at home to Greater Lawrence on May 30 on a damp, cool day in the preliminary round.

The Reggies scored twice in the fifth inning and plated five runs in the top of the sixth. North Reading, meanwhile scored one in the fourth, twice in the sixth and twice in the bottom of the seventh.

“It was a tough game,” admitted Hornets head coach Nicole Zimmerman. “We had two errors that led to two of their runs but I give the girls credit for fighting back in the seventh and not giving up.”

Joelle Ferrazzani went five-plus innings. She allowed six runs (four earned), six hits and three walks.

That was her lone loss in the circle this season as she finished at 5-1.

“They had her number in that sixth inning,” admitted Zimmerman as Emma Levato pitched the rest of the game in relief.

The Hornet offense had nine hits led by Meghan Russell who went a perfect 2 for 2 with a walk and one run batted in.

Ella Yeakel was 2 for 4 and was hit by a pitch as she reached base three times. She had a solo homer to left-center in the fourth and finished with two RBI.

Jillian Corbett was the team’s other multiple hitter going 2 for 4 as she had an RBI double in the seventh.

Meghan Rogers added an RBI double in the sixth.

With that loss, the 26th-seeded Hornets ended the year at 13-8. The 39th-seeded Reggies ended up losing to Pentucket, 4-1, in the first round on June 1 to end the season at 11-11.
