Five All-Stars named for Warrior baseball team

WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield High baseball team had five Middlesex League All-Stars this season: senior Cam DePrizio, senior Marc Gagne, junior Jack Pennacchia, junior Dylan McDermott and sophomore Patrick Maloney. 

Pennacchia was also one of nine players selected to the All-Conference team. 

Gagne was selected as an All-Star for the second consecutive season. He had another strong season on the mound and also chipped in at the plate with a batting average of .375 and 7 RBI.

DePrizio led the team in runs scored with 19, was second in walks with 18 and added 9 RBI.

Pennacchia made the list for the second consecutive season. He also had a strong year as one of Wakefield’s top 3 starters on the hill while also leading the offense in multiple categories including RBI (22), walks (19), doubles (4), triples (2) home runs (3), on-base percentage (.513), slugging percentage (.649) and OPS (1.162). He had an average of .351 and was named team MVP.

McDermott finished second on the team in RBI with 16. He was also second in base hits with 19. 

Maloney had a breakout season on the mound for Wakefield, earning the team’s Pitcher of the Year award after finishing with an incredible earned run average of 0.50. 

The Warriors finished the regular season with a record of 15-5. They were 11-5 in the league and finished the regular season with six straight shutouts. 

Wakefield carried that momentum into the Div. 3 state tournament where they won three games, advancing to the Final Four before falling to North Reading. The Warriors beat Greater New Bedford 10-0 in the first round, previously undefeated Shawsheen Tech 5-4 in the Round of 16 and Bishop Stang 4-0 in the quarterfinals.
