LYNNFIELD — It was a sunny, pleasant day for the newly named Pillings Pond 5K (3.1 miles) July 4th road race in Lynnfield. It was the 58th-edition of the race as nine North Reading residents participated.
The event was run by the Lynnfield Athletic Association for years but was transferred to the Pillings Pond Foundation back in May.
While 341 runners participated last year, the race had 345 this year.
The winner was Lynnfield’s Angelo DeLuca, who came in second place last year. The 20-year-old who just finished his sophomore year at Plymouth State, won with a time of 17:17 which was 30 seconds faster than last year.
Brian McCarthy, of Hansen, was second at 18:11.
The women’s division winner was Jessica Squires as the Washington, DC resident had a time of 20:47. The 26-year old finished 14th overall.
Randa Julio (28), of Peabody, was second in the women’s division at 22:09.
The first North Reading resident to finish was Corey Connally as the 39-year old had a time of 27:33 to place 99th overall. Last year, he was 141st at 29:10.
Jule Slootbeek (41-years old) was 112th with a time of 27:58. In last year’s race, she was 151st at 29:31 as she improved her time by over a minute.
Katelyn Connally (Corey’s wife) was the first North Reading woman to cross the line with a time of 30:05. The 44-year-old came in 160th place. Last year, she was 142nd at 29:11
Sebastion Masiello (66) captured 183rd with a time of 31:11. He came in fifth place in the 60-69 age group. Last year, he had a time of 28:52.to place 134th.
Sharon Asperschlager (43) came in 236th place at 35:50.
Tadum Strob (9) had a time of 40:01 to place while his mother, Kelli (45), finished at 40:02. Last year, Kelli placed 238th at 32.44.
Connor Strob (11) placed 268th with a time of 42.51 while 74-year-old Joseph Spina had a time of 54.14 to round out the North Reading competitors.
