SHARON — The Melrose 12-year old Little League Williamsport baseball team recently participated in the Sectional 3 tournament after winning the District 12 title the week before.
The sectional took place at Deb Samson Park in Sharon.
In the opening game, Melrose fell 7-0 to Walpole on July 16. The next day, they lost, 9-5, to Needham.
The road to Williamsport came to an end on July 18 as Melrose was eliminated from the sectional losing to Parkway by a final of 5-1.
Walpole went on to defeat Needham in the sectional final and will be in the Massachusetts state final four with Braintree, Peabody and Holden. That tournament began Thursday in Beverly.
“It was a tough end to the season, but that’s baseball,” said Melrose head coach Dan Cordella. “While the scores didn’t turn out in our favor, there were some great individual battles that the boys had in some of these games. One of the umpires said the game against Needham was the loudest game he’s worked this year. The players were up on the dugout fence cheering until the end and it really came down to a few plays against a very good team.”
Offensively at sectionals, Oliver Peculis led the way as he had three hits; Tighe Lusas, Ben Cordella and Lawton Chisholm each had two.
Eamonn Judge and Michael Tierney both had one double in the tournament and Tierney and Alex Ogiba led the team in runs batted in with two.
Melrose finished 3-3 overall in the postseason as they were 3-0 in District 12 play.
