Town Center sewer project began Wednesday

THIS MAP shows the route of the downtown sewer project that will take six municipal buildings in the town center off individual septic systems and discharge the effluent into the existing treatment plant at the NRHS/MS complex, which has excess capacity. An estimated total of 2,128 gallons per day from all six buildings will be added to the treatment plant.

NORTH READING — The town’s contractor, N. Granese & Sons, began work on the Town Center / Downtown Sewer Project yesterday, August 13.  Initial work included digging test pits on School Department property within the east field complex driveway (near the Batchelder School) and in the Batchelder School field.

Work will continue within the School Department property in days to follow to finish this phase prior to Labor Day weekend. Travel on the driveway to the east parking lot of the Middle/High School field complex and the Batchelder School will be reduced to a single lane at all times during construction. To avoid potential delays, access the field complex from the west parking lot (via the Middle/High School driveway).

According to Town Engineer Dan O’Donnell, this project will construct a sewer system connecting six municipal and school buildings to the existing wastewater treatment plant located at North Reading Middle/High School via gravity and low pressure.

The buildings are: L.D. Batchelder Elementary School, Police/Fire Public Safety Building, Flint Memorial Library, Third Meeting House/Edith O’Leary Senior Center, Damon Tavern and Rev. Daniel Putnam House.

The total estimated cost of the project is $1,875,000, funded with both local funds and an FY23 Federal EPA Community Grant (20% cost share). The engineering firm of Weston & Sampson designed the project and will provide oversight during the construction phase.

The anticipated construction completion date is October 2025, with school areas anticipated to be completed prior to Labor Day.

See inside today’s Transcript for a map of the sewer connection route.
