HAVERHILL — Last Thursday afternoon, the Lynnfield High golf team defeated host Pentucket, 129-123, at Haverhill Country Club. With that win, the Pioneers improved to 2-0.
“That match was a grind,” pointed out Pioneers head coach Mike Moresco. “It is a private club and it was the first time any of our kids have ever played there since we hosted them last year. Haverhill, along with Myopia Hunt, is one of the toughest courses in our league.”
Angelo Covino and Aidan Bird led Lynnfield in scoring with 23 points each (Stableford scoring). Max Sabbagh, the top-slotted sophomore was third in scoring with 21 points.
In the season opener on Aug. 26, the Pioneers defeated Essex Tech, 191-171, at Reedy Meadow in town as that is the Hawks home course.
“The kids are very familiar playing there,” explained Moresco. “We were very businesslike and performed well.”
In that match, senior captain Drew George led the way with 36 points while Sabbagh had 33. Junior Sam Bird was third with 32.
“Five of our top six scorers were in the 30’s,” said Moresco, as the top six of eight scores counts to the team’s total score.
On Sept. 4, the Pioneers will face a tough test as they go to Hillview Golf Club to take on North Reading at 3:30 p.m.
The Hornets are the defending Cape Ann League Kinney Division champions.
On Sept. 8, Lynnfield hosts Newburyport at Sagamore Spring.
That event will start at 3:30 p.m.
