LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield High golf team suffered its first loss of the season on Monday afternoon as they fell to guest Newburyport, 164-153, at Sagamore Spring.
With the loss, the Pioneers fell to 4-1 while the Clippers improved to 3-0.
“It was an early-season showdown,” said Pioneers head coach Mike Moresco. “They have a very good team with outstanding depth and that was the difference.”
Senior co-captain, Drew George, led Lynnfield in scoring with 33 points (Stableford scoring). Angelo Covino was second at 27 while Aidan Bird scored 20.
“Their top three players all scored at least 28 points,” pointed out Moresco.
On Sept. 4, the Pioneers beat host North Reading, 159-155, at Hillview Golf Course.
“It is always nice to win a road match and we caught them on an off-day for them,” said Moresco, as the Hornets are the defending Cape Ann League Kinney Division champions.
Max Sabbagh, Jared Burke and Covino all led the Pioneers in scoring with 28 points each.
Junior co-captain Cam Dembro, at the seventh slot, scored 24 points which made the difference.
On Sept. 2, the Pioneers won their home opener, 174-153, over Triton.
“That was a very good day for us,” recalled Moresco. “We had three players crack the 30-point mark.”
Sabbagh, the team’s top-slotted player, scored a team-season high score of 37, while Dembro was second with 32. Burke, a junior, added 31.
Lynnfield will face a tough test in its next match on Sept. 11 as they travel to the Myopia Hunt Club to take on Hamilton-Wenham. That match will start at 3:30 p.m.
