LYNNFIELD — Last fall, the Lynnfield High girls’ cross country team went 2-3 overall as they finished in 4th place in the Cape Ann League Baker Division.

Five seniors: Gabby Bottaro, Kaila George, Caitlin Buoniconti, Ciara Long and Lily White graduated.

When Pioneers second-year head coach Liane Cook opened fall practice on Aug. 18, she welcomed back six veterans.

Four of them are this year’s captains: Abby Lopez, Shea Moore, April Sun and Maeve Wertz. Wertz is a junior while the other three girls are seniors.

Lynnfield will be one of the oldest teams in the league this year as, along with the three senior captains, they have four other 12th-graders.

Those four runners are Isabella Giacobbi, Audrey Janielis, Sophie Kennison and Lillian Williams who are all new-comers.

The three other members on the roster are sophomores, Sarah Kaufman, Gemma Primavera and Afsana Rabbani.

Primavera and Rabbani are the two other returners from last year.

“I am hoping that we can finish about the .500 mark this year,” said Cook. “Even though we have some new seniors on the team, they all have experience playing other sports.”

The Pioneers open up the season on Sept. 10 as they host Manchester-Essex at 3:45 p.m.
