

BURLINGTON — The Wakefield High girls’ cross country team traveled to Burlington yesterday and came home with an impressive 19-45 victory over the Red Devils in the first regular season meet for both squads.
“The girls had big improvements from their run on this course last year,” said Wakefield head coach Karen Barrett.
Junior Quin Wilcox made her cross country debut and took 1st overall in 19:46, beating Burlington’s top runner by over a minute.
“Quin had a great debut,” said Barrett. “She ran a fantastic race.”
The Warriors went on to take places 3-7 overall to seal the victory.
Senior captain Liza Bangtson was 3rd overall and the 2nd Warrior to cross the line in 20:59.
Freshman Lillian McLean was 4th overall in 21:27.
“She looked really strong,” said Barrett.
Senior captain Abby Richardson (5th, 22:06), junior Riley Mitchell (6th, 22:32), junior Peyton Knowles (7th, 22:56) and junior Lisa Letchford (9th, 23:28) finished up the scoring for the Warriors.
“All four ran really great races and finished strong,” said Barrett. “I was very happy with the effort and attitude the girls brought forth today. It was a great way to start the season.”
Wakefield will now have two weeks to prepare for their next meet which will take place in Watertown on Sept. 30.
