WAKEFIELD –– The Conservation Commission has opened a public comment period for a proposed Wetlands Bylaw as well as Wakefield’s Open Space and Recreation Plan. Community members can submit comments until September 10, 2025.
The Plan document and proposed bylaw text, as well as the comment forms, are available at www.wakefieldma.gov/conservation.

Wetlands Bylaw: The purpose of this bylaw is to protect the wetlands, water resources, and contiguous land areas of the Town of Wakefield by controlling activities deemed to have a significant effect upon wetland values, including but not limited to the following: public or private water supply, groundwater, flood control, erosion and sedimentation control, storm damage prevention, water quality, water pollution control, fisheries, wildlife, wildlife habitat, recreation and rare species habitat including rare plant and animal species.
Note that this bylaw is in draft form. It must be presented to, and approved by, voters at Town Meeting before it becomes effective.
Open Space and Recreation Plan: The Conservation Commission is updating Wakefield’s Open Space and Recreation Plan. This update will address the continued need to preserve and protect natural resources as well as enhance and expand recreational opportunities for all. The plan will seek to highlight the unique natural amenities and recreational opportunities found in every section of Town.
The Commission would like community members to focus on the 7-Year Plan, beginning on page 69, though it will welcome comments on other sections of the plan, as well.
