WEST NEWBURY — The Lynnfield High field hockey team rolled over host Pentucket, 6-0, up in West Newbury on Monday afternoon on a sunny, warm day. With that victory, the Pioneers improved to 6-1 overall and 6-0 in the Cape Ann League.

“It was a great bounce-back win after the Monomoy game,” stated Pioneers head coach Kerri Doherty. “We took care of business.”

Lynnfield led this one, 3-0, at the half.

Senior co-captain Izzy Fiorentino broke the ice scoring with 6:03 left in the first quarter assisted by Sophia Morgese.

Fiorentino then made it 2-0 with 3:24 left in the first assisted by Mia Capodilupo.

Fellow senior co-captain Cameron Munion, netted the third goal with 4:30 remaining in the first half. Lauren Mattia picked up the assist.

With 4:52 left in the third quarter, Mattia made it 4-0 with Grace Allen assisting.

“It was a beautiful reverse chip by Lauren,” pointed out Doherty.

Munion had the fifth goal with 4:10 remaining in the third assisted by Nola Maney.

Stefania Bonavita then scored her first varsity goal assisted by Maney with 3:26 left in the game.

Pioneer goalkeeper, Olivia Sylvester, recorded her fifth shutout as she had eight saves to improve to 6-1.

Lynnfield had 11 shots and seven corners while the Panthers had six corners.

Last Saturday, the Pioneers were shutout, 4-0, by guest Monomoy in the team’s first non-league game of the year.

The Sharks, a team from Cape Cod who have been a field hockey power for a while, improved to 4-2.

Monomoy scored one goal each quarter. Their first goal came with 5:12 left in the first. With 13:02 remaining in the second, they made it 2-0.

The third tally came with 5:52 left in the third and their final goal came with 5:57 remaining in the game.

Lynnfield had two corners and seven shots on goal while the Sharks had 10 shots and six corners.

Sylvester made six saves in net.

“This was a wake-up call for us,” said Doherty. “We were outplayed and made several mental mistakes.”

On Sept. 17, the Pioneers shut out rival North Reading, 2-0, on the road.

After a scoreless opening quarter, the Pioneers scored in the second with 6:13 left as Fiorentino found the back of the Hornets’ net assisted by Mattia.

With 8:50 left in the game, Morgese scored, unassisted, for the other tally.

Sylvester made four stops to record her fourth shutout in a row.

“We put our nose to the grindstone that game and that was a huge win for us,” said Doherty, as the Hornets are the defending CAL Kinney Division co-champs.

On Sept. 25, the Pioneers host Ipswich at 4 p.m.

The team then visits Newburyport in a huge showdown on Sept. 29 at 4 p.m. The Pioneers are looking for the season sweep over the Clippers as they beat them, 2-1, in the season opener on Sept. 3.
