LYNNFIELD — On Monday afternoon, the Lynnfield High golf team topped guest Pentucket, 156-154, at Sagamore Spring on a warm, sunny day. With that win, the Pioneers completed the season sweep over the Panthers as they improved to 5-4.

“We were able to grind this one out,” said LHS head coach Mike Moresco. “Angelo (Covino) came up big when we needed him to.”

Covino chipped in for birdie on the ninth hole to score six points as he finished with 25 points (Stableford scoring).

“If he did not make that chip he would have had to putt for par and the score would have been tied,” pointed out Moresco. “Then we would have had to go to the seventh scorer on each team to decide the winner.”

CJ Patermo led Lynnfield with 30 points while Max Sabbagh scored 28. Covino’s 25 was third.

On Sept. 18, the Pioneers lost by two points as they were edged, 159-157, at Sagamore to Essex Tech.

The Hawks were able to get a split of the season series as the Pioneers won the first meeting in late August.

“Their eighth golfer scored 26 points and that was the difference,” said Moresco.

Jared Burke led Lynnfield in scoring in this one as he had 33 points. Covino had 30 while Sabbagh and senior captain, Drew George, each  had 26 points.

On Sept. 16, the Pioneers fell, 160-135, at Sagamore to Ipswich.

“We did not play very well that day,” admitted Moresco.

Sabbagh and Burke both tied for top point-scorers with 24. Meanwhile, George and Covino both added 23 points.

On Sept. 11, Lynnfield lost to host Hamilton-Wenham, 169-127, at the Myopia Hunt Club.

“That is the toughest course in the league and, being private, is the first time any of our players have ever played there,” said Moresco.

Sabbagh had 24 points while Covino was right behind him with 23. George was third with 22.

Lynnfield needs two more wins in order to qualify for the sectionals as they will play 13 matches this fall. They have four matches remaining.

On Sept. 25, they host North Reading at 3 p.m. looking for the season sweep over the Hornets.

The Pioneers will then go to Ould Newbury Golf Club to take on Triton on Sept. 29 at 3 p.m. Lynnfield is also looking for the season sweep over the Vikings.
