Girls’ XC cruises past Georgetown 19-41
By STEPHEN MARTELLUCCI
GEORGETOWN — Lynnfield High girls’ cross country coach Liane Cook knew she had a win in her pocket heading into her team’s meet at Georgetown on Oct. 1 since the Royals have only two runners.
The Pioneers ended up winning the meet, 19-41, to improve to 2-1 on a sunny, cool day.
“Despite the predictable win, the team ran very well,” said Cook. “Although we never ran on this course before, it is a comparable distance and difficulty as our home course. Every runner had a personal-best time compared to the last time we ran at home on Sept. 10.”
With their top runner, Abby Lopez, not competing due to illness, Maeve Wertz was the winner completing the 2.86-mile course with a time of 21:56.
Georgetown captured second while Sophie Kennison placed third overall (23:00). Shea Moore came in fourth (23:24).
Isabella Giacobbi captured fifth (23:43) while Lillian Williams came in sixth (23:56) to round out the Pioneers’ top five.
The next meet for the Pioneers will be on Oct. 8 as they host Amesbury at 3:30 p.m. It is also the team’s Senior Day as the seven LHS 12th-graders will be honored.
On Oct. 11, the team will travel to Fort Devens in Ayer to compete in the Devens Pre-Championship Classic at Willard Field. That event will start at 10 a.m.
