WILMINGTON — In a non-league match on Monday afternoon, the North Reading High volleyball team beat Wilmington, 3-0, on the road. With that win, the Hornets improved to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in non-league matches.
The Hornets won the three sets, 25-12, 25-20, and 25-7.
“We have played them off and on the past few seasons and also played them in the preseason back in August,” explained Hornets head coach Mike Milone. “I have a good relationship with their coach and they just happened to be a little down this year.”
Standout players against the Wildcats, according to Milone, were Willow Koepke, Sydney Scholz and Ella Maier.
“All three served very well,” said Milone, whose squad is in first place in the Cape Ann League Kinney Division. It was the team’s third consecutive victory.
On Oct. 9, the Hornets have their Dig Pink game as they host Essex Tech at 5:15 p.m. looking for the season sweep over the Hawks.
There will be raffles and a bake sale as Milone is hoping for a huge turnout since the funds raised will go to the Elle Fund to support the fight against breast cancer.
On Oct. 14, the Hornets visit Pentucket up in West Newbury at 5:15 p.m. trying to get a season sweep over the Panthers.
On Oct. 15, the Hornets host Georgetown at 5:30 p.m. for Senior Day. Before the match, the five Hornet seniors will be honored. North Reading is also looking to sweep the Royals.
The Hornets entered this week ranked 7th in the MIAA Division 3 power rankings. The top 32 teams at the end of the regular season, automatically qualify for the state tournament. The Hornets are in the tournament with their 11-1 record and six matches remaining.
