AMESBURY — On Monday afternoon, the North Reading high field hockey team visited Amesbury. The Hornets were able to come home with a tight, 2-1, win on a very warm, sunny day.
With that result, the Hornets’ record improved to 9-4-1 overall and 6-4-1 in the Cape Ann League.
“Amesbury is a much-improved team from last year,” said North Reading head coach Mikayla Allen. “It was also the first time we have played on a grass surface and that played a big factor.”
Just 3:30 into the game, Jemma Hanegraaff scored unassisted.
The Red Hawks tied it at the end of the first quarter off a corner.
The game-winning goal came with 5:05 left in the game as Brittany Morris scored and that tally was also unassisted.
Hornets senior goalie, Thea Panousos, made five saves as her record went to 8-4-1.
In a non-league game last Saturday morning, the Hornets rolled over Arlington Catholic, 6-1, on the road.
Mia Driscoll was the star of this game recording her second hat trick of the year. The freshman scored twice in the first quarter and once more in the fourth.
“She did a great job,” said Allen, about the forward.
Brooke Morris, Josie Lambert and Amelia Waron had the three other Hornet goals. For Waron it was the junior’s first-career goal.
Panousos made four stops against the Cougars.
North Reading took command of this game in the opening half scoring four times.
It was a good bounce-back win for the team after they were shutout, 6-0, at Newburyport on Oct. 1.
The Clippers were able to complete the season sweep over the Hornets as they won the first meeting, 4-1, back on Sept. 5.
“They have improved a lot since that first game,” said Allen.
Newburyport scored two goals in the first half and they got their third goal early in the third quarter.
“After that third goal we crumbled,” admitted Allen. “They scored three of their six goals off corners.”
Panousos was very busy in net making nine saves as most of the action took place in the Hornet zone.
On Columbus Day, the Hornets visit rival Lynnfield at 10 a.m. The Pioneers won the first meeting, 2-0, back on Sept. 17.
With their win over Amesbury, the Hornets are ranked 27th in the MIAA Division 3 power rankings. The top 32 ranked teams at the end of the regular season automatically qualify for the state tournament.
