By STEPHEN MARTELLUCCI
AMESBURY — The North Reading High girls’ soccer team won, 6-2, at Amesbury on Tuesday afternoon. With that win, North Reading improved to 8-1-2 overall and in the Cape Ann League.
The Hornets led this one wire-to-wire as they were up 3-1 at halftime.
Just 1:50 into the game, Ariana Demetri scored assisted by Allie Lanciani. Lanciani, the team’s top scorer, then made it 2-0 8:39 in with the assist going to Juliet Wasilewski.
Kiersten Higgins had the third goal at the 33:32 mark assisted by Reilly Tassinari.
The Red Hawks got on the scoreboard with only 33 seconds remaining in the opening half.
Despite allowing that late goal, the Hornets bounced back scoring their fourth tally 4:10 into the second half as Higgins scored her second assisted by Tassinari.
Lanciani had the fifth goal 13:29 into the second stanza and it was unassisted.
Less than two minutes later, Demetri scored again with Tassinari picking up her third assist.
Amesbury then scored the final goal of the day at the 56:23 mark.
Maya Grossi played in goal in the opening half and did not make any saves as she improved to 6-0. Hannah Frew made one save in net in the second half.
“All components of our offense clicked, getting contributions from Lanciani, Higgins and Tassinari is so important for us,” said Hornets head coach Sean Killeen. “We need all of our players to be clicking against every opponent.”
On Oct. 2, the Hornets tied Newburyport, 1-1, at home.
Aoife Tykolsky got the Clippers on the scoreboard 31:54 into the first half.
The Hornets tied it at the 74:32 mark of the second half as Lanciani scored assisted by Higgins.
Frew played the entire game in net and made six saves as her record went to 2-1-2.
“We showed a lot of grit and character in this one,” said Killeen. “We need to play 80 minutes of soccer like the last 15 minutes to avoid early mistakes and put pressure on better teams early. With so many seniors with varsity experience we should be controlling games from start to finish.”
On Oct. 9, the Hornets visit Triton up in Byfield at 4:30 p.m. North Reading beat the Vikings, 5-1, in the first matchup back on Sept. 9.
On Oct. 14, the Hornets visit rival Lynnfield in a huge showdown at 6 p.m. The Hornets are looking to get a split of the season series as the Pioneers won the first meeting, 5-1, back on Sept. 18.
The Hornets were ranked 11th in the MIAA Division 3 power rankings heading into this week. The top 32 teams at the end of the regular season automatically qualify for the state tournament.
