HAVERHILL — On Sept. 30, the North Reading High golf team was edged, 152-151, by host Pentucket at Haverhill County Club.
“Only two of our players have played there before,” pointed out Hornets head coach Jon Kiniry, as Haverhill is a private course. “We shot pretty well considering that.”
North Reading was led in scoring by the two players who have played the course before, as Leo Romanski scored 35 points (Stableford scoring) while fellow senior co-captain, Conrad Gerber had 30.
Coming in third on the team was Bryce Fitts who scored 25 points.
Although they have won just one match, Kiniry feels that his squad is much better than their record shows.
“Six of our losses have come by 10 points or less,” he pointed out.
North Reading is one of the least experienced teams in the Cape Ann League this year as they lost seven seniors to graduation from last year’s CAL Kinney Division championship team that went 10-1.
The CAL Open will take place on Oct. 16 at Far Corner in West Boxford.
